My nerves are shot!!!

April 7th, 2008 at 08:54 pm

Hubby called me at the office this morning to let me know they had a meeting at work this morning and he is being laid off, effective 4/18/08 (nice two weeks notice). He is a contract employee, and the contract he was working on was due for renewal in June, but they decided that they are terminating the contract effective 4/18. So I am now stressed out, although I am trying to remain calm. He knew they project was likely to be "non-renewed" come June, so he had already been sending out his resume.

My Mom always tells me "things happen for a reason" and I am trying to trust that, but it is hard to find a way to find happiness right now.

I'm a serial contractor, so I empathize with your household right now. It's true that the nerves are jostled when termination is expedited. Does your husband qualify for unemployment insurance? Is he in touch with a network of recruiters?

Something will turn up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the next opportunity's timing will be ideal for you and your husband.

Thanks guys. It will all turn out okay (I am hoping). He is working for a technical company that is already looking for new work for him, plus he has had his resume out for about 2 months. Plus, I think he was working on calling everyone in his Rolodex this afternoon. I am sure he will find something soon, he always does. i am just a doom and gloom kinda gal Smile

If he has a contract, he may be able to negotiate his severance to be higher. I had a friend this happened to(she had a longer contract though), and she managed to negotiate a year of full salary and 2 years of health coverage when they let her go for budget reasons. It took her few months, but she got a much better settlement than they originally offered her. And without a lawyer.

Em... so, are the numbers in your bio correct? If so, it may be time to really beef up the EF.... I'm sorry this has happened. I think I better beef up my EF as well....

With you and DH on the same page, you are way ahead of some people. I would be worrying too, but try not to!

BA-unfortunately, those numbers are correct (hence the stress Smile I have a part-time job also and we have decided that all of that money goes into the savings account until further notice. Somehow, that money usually just "disappears" into the financial abyss. So, there is some aggressive saving to be done while he is still receiving paychecks (the way his pay periods are, he will have 3 more checks I think)
